Mendhi Tattoos

Temporary tattoos to celebrate your inner goddess.

A traditional Indian art form, Mendhis are made from a natural dye called henna, and they wash off gradually in about two weeks. They are very simple to create at home and a lot of fun to do with a few friends. A simple stop at your local health food store is all it takes and you too can be a walking art form -- for just a couple of minutes and a few bucks.

Here's what you do:

Mix water with the tattoo henna until it reaches the consistency of icing. Fill the pastry bag with the mixture and attach a decorator's icing tip to the end. Squeeze the bag from the top and practice decorating on a piece of paper first. Get tattoo stencil designs and more ideas at Tattoo-me.com or The Henna Page.

You'll need:

  • Tattoo henna (not hair henna)
  • disposable pastry bag
  • icing tips

Do-It-Yourself Tips:

  • Try out your concoctions on an inconspicuous place like your forearm before you go slathering it all your body and have fun!
  • Use recipes with perishable food items such as eggs and veggies immediately or store in an airtight container up to one week in the frig.
  • Vodka, witch hazel, vinegar and lemon juice are natural preservatives and help extend the life of a DIY mixture.
  • Sugar and salt scrubs generally keep for a couple months as long as the container has a tight seal.
  • Store aromatherapy massage oils in a dark, well-sealed glass container for up to 6 months.
  • For gifts, consider separating the dry ingredients from the liquid and giving the recipient directions on how to mix them in one-use increments.
