Markey's Funny Bone Rub

Calendula and carrot team up to soothe dry skin.

Possibly the unsung heroes of our bodies, elbows take on a heap of wear and tear. They prop up our heads when our necks give out, absorb the shock of a rogue tennis swing and even catch us when our stiletto heel breaks and sends us sprawling on the sidewalk. Inspired by Garden of Wisdom owner Markey Martin, this healing concoction gives elbows the attention they deserve. Calendula oil helps heal cracked skin while the carrot seed essential oil conditions skin and relieves irritation. Also good for knees, knuckles, heels and any other area of dry, under-served skin.

Here's what you do:

Blend the oils together in a glass bottle and massage onto elbows after a shower or before bed. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 12 months.

You'll need:

  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) calendula oil
  • 12 to 15 drops of carrot seed essential oil

Do-It-Yourself Tips:

  • Try out your concoctions on an inconspicuous place like your forearm before you go slathering it all your body and have fun!
  • Use recipes with perishable food items such as eggs and veggies immediately or store in an airtight container up to one week in the frig.
  • Vodka, witch hazel, vinegar and lemon juice are natural preservatives and help extend the life of a DIY mixture.
  • Sugar and salt scrubs generally keep for a couple months as long as the container has a tight seal.
  • Store aromatherapy massage oils in a dark, well-sealed glass container for up to 6 months.
  • For gifts, consider separating the dry ingredients from the liquid and giving the recipient directions on how to mix them in one-use increments.
