Planet Beach has been making waves lately as an up-and-coming tanning hot spot. Our resident tanning expert, Carolyn, headed over to their Scottsdale location to see what all the fuss is about. Here's her view of the next generation of tanning joints.

When I envision a tanning salon images of linoleum flooring, outdated yet space-age looking machines, and the distinct smell of slightly burnt tropical coconut immediately come to mind. Not quite the ideal spa environment, right? Luckily, just across the street from Scottsdale Fashion Square lies Planet Beach Tanning Salon and Spa. This clean, ultra-hip day spa offers head-to-toe spa treatments performed by high-tech equipment. Each treatment is offered in a private room complete with oxygen and complete tune control. I was lucky enough to spend the afternoon at Planet Beach to test out their new age treatments.

Hydro Derma Fusion: The first stop of my contempo spa experience began with a futuristic machine that almost resembled a tanning bed mixed with a spaceship. However, this Hydro Derma Fusion, or Hydration Station is a UV-free treatment equivalent to a full-body steam. I slathered myself in a thick, yummy lotion and climbed into the surprisingly comfy hydration bed. With a press of a button my entire body was steamed for 20 minutes while I relaxed and listened to music. After my session was over, I felt detoxified and my skin was silky smooth.

Hydro Massage: Next, I tried the hydro massage, which was located in a dim, tranquil room. The Hydro Massage resembled a bed and had a huge personal flat screen television with access to TV, internet and massage control settings. I laid down with a pillow and felt like I was floating on air. The best part was that I was able to customize my treatment by changing the pressure and speed at the push of a button.

Mystic Tan: After my massage I chilled for a few minutes to watch a short video that explained and showed how to properly mystic tan. Planet Beach offers two levels of mystic tan depending on skin tone. I opted for the lighter level, which gave me a noticeable glow.

Even though my treatments were completely UV free, I left looking and feeling like I had just spent the entire day lounging on a sunny beach.
