We sent SpaGirl Carolyn to check out About Face's new digs. Here's what she dug up: I love beauty products. Lotion, makeup, fragrance, shimmer -- you name it, I have it (or want it!). So why is it that with drawers full of makeup and countless bottles of lotions and potions to choose from, I find myself using the same old stuff day after day? No matter how many shadows, glosses, and tinted creams I own, many of them go unused because I do not know how to properly apply them. Sick of wasting my precious pennies on wasted product, I decided to enlist the help of About Face, the ultimate fashion, makeup and skincare shop.

About Face is not your typical overpriced bling-bling Scottsdale boutique. From discount designer duds, locally designed jewelry, shoes, clothing, and signature line of high-quality mineral makeup, About Face has everything. During my recent visit, I scheduled a private makeup class with Devy, the friendliest (and best dressed) person I have ever met. Devy gave me a tour around the store and introduced me to her absolutely adorable six-pound store pup, Olivia. Next, she asked me what I liked and disliked about my complexion and we briefly discussed my current skincare routine. We then headed to the treatment room to take a closer look at my skin with a skin scope. The skin scope machine resembled a projector with a curtain attached to the back. I put my head under the curtain and looked into a small mirror. Devy sat across from me and looked into the opposite end of the machine. When we were both able to see my face she flipped on the black light. All of a sudden my face was stark white with dark purple spots. Devy explained that the white areas on my face show patches of healthy skin while the purple dots reveal sun damage and problem areas. The skin scope was so in-depth that I could see the outline of my sunglasses and a curling iron burn on my forehead from a couple years ago. With some sun damage and dry areas my skin was in need of a daily skincare revamp.

Next, we headed to Devy’s makeup station where she applied and recommended skincare products to moisturize and protect my skin from future skin damage. But before putting any makeup on my face, she told me her No. 1 pro makeup philosophy: YOU wear your makeup, never let your makeup wear you. She explained that makeup should enhance an individual’s features, not cover up or mask imperfections. She also likes to keep things simple so her clients can easily recreate the same look at home. Devy began my makeover with an all natural-looking cream to powder mineral foundation. She swept a light green eye shadow across my lower lids and brushed a brown-coral color under my brows. She then showed me how to correctly apply a light blushy bronzer and finished my look with a few strokes of mascara and a sweep of lip color. Devy had tons of tips and tricks that made my eyes pop and my skin glow. She went over every application step twice to make sure I could achieve the same look at home. With a minimal amount of product and a few application tricks I looked polished, natural and no where near overdone. By using a combination of the products from About Face and what I already have at home, I now know how to apply makeup that flatters my complexion. I am also aware of what my skin needs to stay healthy and what I can do to keep it protected and pretty.
