When I arrive at the Neuromuscular Performance Institute, I am greeted by the all-muscular, handsome (very married) presence of Paul Ruth. For a split second I am intimidated, but then we immediately exchange a laugh or two over my driving comedy of errors and I am quickly put at ease. His office, thoughtfully decorated in violet and kaki-green hues, is consistent with Ruth's personality -- professional, gracious, healing.

Normally, I seek out a massage for relaxation rather than pain relief, but today I hope to get my hunchback shoulders fixed. Thankfully, I have come to the right place. Ruth asks me about my pain, throws on a Jewel CD, and describes NMT as he goes directly to the source -- my shoulder. He explains that by treating trigger points, he hopes to relieve ischemia (lack of blood supply) and restore my body's biochemical dysfunction. This massage modality, I learn, is designed to go to the source of the problem in hopes of curing, rather than alleviating surface level pain. The process is unfamiliar and occasionally uncomfortable, but I decide Ruth is a yang healer, which is exactly what I need today. I say yang healer because his approach is grounded, he has a high appreciation for the body and he understands what the body needs, which is what those of us in pain (which is most of us) want so badly. Someone who is not afraid to seek a cure for your pain -- hallelujah!

Ruth pursues the trigger points of my shoulder for as long as it takes, proceeds with a full-body relaxation massage and sends me off with a shoulder stretch to do at home. I leave his office feeling a change in my body, but I have a feeling that I would have to be patient to feel the results. Sure enough, I was sore then next day ... but then the day after, I was healed to the point that I had forgotten about ever having the pain. Whether you are in pain or just need a good relaxation massage, I would highly recommend NPI.
